What the Coalition for Cyclist Safety built, published, and deployed this year, and why coordination across an entire industry is the only way to get V2X cyclist safety onto the road.
The Problem We Are Built to Solve
A cyclist and a driver approach the same junction. Both are paying attention, both are following the rules, and neither can see the other. A building, a parked van, heavy rain, or plain darkness sits between them. Every safety system that depends on sight fails in the same moment, and that includes the electronic ones. Cameras and radar have made vehicles far better at reacting to what is in view, but they inherit the oldest limitation on the road: they only detect what is already visible.
V2X, vehicle-to-everything communication, removes that dependency. A bicycle and a car that announce themselves digitally are aware of each other before line of sight exists, whether the obstacle is a wall, a truck, or the weather. The technology works. The standards exist. Pilots on real streets have proven both. None of that was the hard part.
The hard part is coordination. Bicycle manufacturers, carmakers, chipset vendors, network operators, and road authorities each hold one piece of a system that only delivers a safety benefit when all the pieces arrive together. A connected bicycle achieves nothing on a road where no vehicle is listening; a connected vehicle gains nothing from a bicycle that cannot speak. The Coalition for Cyclist Safety exists to make those pieces arrive together. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and this report sets out what that coordination produced, from our founding in October 2023 through this year's deployments, publications, and open data. The Coalition has grown from 19 founding members in October 2023 to 49 member organizations today, spanning automotive, cycling, telecom, technology, and the public sector. That breadth is the point. Getting a bicycle and a car to speak the same digital language requires the companies that build both, the vendors that supply the chipsets, the operators that run the networks, and the authorities that manage the roads, all working from a shared roadmap. MILESTONES
The Founding Vision
The Coalition was officially formed on October 23rd, 2023, bringing together 19 founding members from automotive, cycling, telecom, and tech.
Expanding the Coalition
Notable brands including Stromer, BMC, and Shimano joined, strengthening our ability to push for safer roads through V2X solutions.
C-V2X Deployment Plan
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced its nationwide V2X integration strategy, directly supporting the Coalition's deployment mission.
Partner Event, Amsterdam
Coalition members gathered April 9 and 10, 2025 to exchange insights, showcase solutions, and strengthen partnerships around V2X deployment. Read the event report.
Road Safety Data Explorer
The Coalition published the Road Safety Data Explorer, an open resource covering 39 countries, drawn from the International Transport Forum road safety database and US federal crash data. Anyone can filter, compare, and download it at no cost.
International Transport Forum, Leipzig
The Coalition presented at the ITF summit in Leipzig, making the case that cyclist safety is a key enabler of sustainable mobility and Vision Zero, and demonstrating early use cases such as green phase prioritization. Read the report.
Roadlite:ON V2X Unveiled
Coalition members Canyon and nfiniity unveiled the Roadlite:ON V2X, the first high-performance urban e-bike to fully implement the current automotive connectivity standard: production-ready, signaling its presence to nearby vehicles and alerting its rider through haptic grips.
Euro NCAP Position Paper
The Coalition published a position paper calling on Euro NCAP to award points from 2029 for vehicle-side V2X functions that receive and act on standardized messages from cyclists, citing roughly 1,900 to 2,000 cyclist fatalities on EU roads every year.
V2Xperience, Helmond
Within the Coalition's large scale deployment workstream, V2Xperience brought cooperative ITS onto real streets and real intersections in Helmond, together with Spectrum FiftyNine, SWARCO, Gazelle, the City of Helmond, and SmartwayZ.NL.
Face-to-Face, Helmond Castle
The Coalition's annual face-to-face meeting takes place on 14 and 15 October at Helmond Castle in the Netherlands, hosted by Gemeente Helmond, bringing members together where the deployment work is happening.
Public Data, Free to Everyone
Road safety arguments should stand on evidence that anyone can check. That is why the Coalition publishes the Road Safety Data Explorer, an open tool covering fatalities among cyclists and other vulnerable road users across 39 countries. The figures are drawn from the International Transport Forum road safety database and from US federal crash data, and the tool lets anyone, member or not, filter by country, compare across borders, follow trends over time, and download the underlying data at no cost.
We built it because the case for V2X begins with an honest accounting of where cyclist fatalities happen and how the numbers are moving. It serves researchers, journalists, advocates, and policymakers as much as it serves our members, and it will keep growing as new data is published.
