FROM VISION TO DEPLOYMENT
The Coalition for Cyclist Safety is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brings industries together so V2X technology can be deployed at scale: vehicles, bicycles, and infrastructure aware of one another, and cyclists included in the connected road from the start.
Why V2X, and Why Now
Roughly 1,900 to 2,000 cyclists lose their lives on EU roads every year, about 10% of all road fatalities. In the United States, cyclist fatalities rose from 729 in 2014 to 1,166 in 2023 while overall road safety programs made progress elsewhere. Those numbers are why V2X matters. The Coalition for Cyclist Safety exists to help V2X technology reach the world's roads at scale, with cyclists included from the start.
Our mission is to enable the deployment of V2X technology at scale, enhancing awareness on the world's roads, and to ensure cyclists are included in that technology: vehicle-to-everything communication that lets bicycles, vehicles, and infrastructure sense one another before line of sight exists. When stakeholders align around a shared goal, we can create a more connected and safer mobility future.
Programs, Not Promises
Member-led working groups span technical standards, certification, deployment programs, safety rating protocols, and communications. Deployment projects put the technology onto real streets: V2Xperience in Helmond brings cooperative ITS to everyday intersections, and members Canyon and nfiniity have unveiled the Roadlite:ON V2X, the first e-bike built to the current automotive connectivity standard. Policy advocacy translates the work into lasting change, most recently our position paper calling on Euro NCAP to award points from 2029 for vehicles that act on standardized messages from cyclists.
And because road safety arguments should stand on evidence anyone can check, we publish the data itself: cyclist and vulnerable road user fatality figures for 39 countries, drawn from the International Transport Forum road safety database and US federal crash data, free to filter, compare, and download. Members meet face to face every year to hold the work to account, and the full record of what we did this year is public in our Activity Report 2026.
A Connected, Safer Future
We envision a world where bicycles are seamlessly integrated into connected traffic ecosystems through the widespread adoption of V2X technology, as a key path to dramatically reducing cycling fatalities globally. In that world, a cyclist and a driver approaching the same junction are aware of each other before either becomes visible, and "I didn't see them" becomes a phrase of the past.
A Nonprofit, Plainly
The Coalition for Cyclist Safety is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization under the United States Internal Revenue Code, EIN 99-1236044, founded on 23 October 2023 and grown to 49 member organizations today. Our members include commercial companies. Our purpose is public, our Road Safety Data Explorer is free and built on publicly available ITF and NHTSA data, and our nonprofit status can be independently verified.
