Cyclists and vehicles sharing roads, the case for V2X safety technology

WHY JOIN THE
COALITION

Join forces with industry leaders to accelerate V2X deployment and improve safety for cyclists and all road users.

Real People. Real Stories.

These stories highlight a critical safety issue facing cyclists today. V2X technology offers the solution we need to help address these crashes and create safer roads for everyone.

My brother was killed by a pickup truck driver on the wrong side of the road. The Alameda County DA had irrefutable evidence, but with no eyewitnesses and the assumption that jurors are drivers, the DA plea bargained the case to Misdemeanor Manslaughter with a $100 fine and 100 hours of community service.

The joy of cycling is indisputable, but as cyclists our greatest risk is that driver and rider cannot see one another. A V2X ecosystem that lets drivers see riders and vice versa seemed inconceivable ten years ago. The V2X ecosystem is available today and now it is a question of how quickly automotive, bicycle and municipal groups can collaborate to enhance rider safety.

On October 21, 2021, while cycling in broad daylight on a designated bike lane in Golden, Colorado, I was struck from behind by a distracted driver who drifted out of her lane. Despite following all traffic laws, wearing reflective gear, and using daytime running lights, I was nearly killed.

The crash left me with 11 broken bones, a concussion, a collapsed lung, and internal bleeding. After days in the ICU and months of recovery, I am still dealing with life-altering pain. This underscores the critical need for technologies that enable communication between cars and bikes, improving awareness and saving lives.
